Upcoming processing to adjust framing on some Landsat 8 scenes
In 2023 and 2024, Landsat 8 experienced occasional issues with the ancillary data used in processing that impacted geolocation information in some Landsat products.
Updated ancillary data now provide nominal geolocational accuracy for Landsat 8 products. An upcoming processing effort will correct the accuracy of the impacted products described below.
The processing effort will begin Monday, June 16, 2025, and includes the following:
- Reprocessing of existing Landsat 8 products
About 3,200 Level-1 products, along with their associated Level-2, U.S ARD, and Level-3 products, will be reprocessed and will replace the products currently available. - New processing of 2023 acquisitions
About 400 images acquired on January 26, 2023, and October 18, 2023, will be processed and added to the archive for the first time. - Regeneration of previously removed products
About 100 Level-1 products and their associated Level-2 products that were removed due to earlier issues will be reprocessed and added back into the archive.
Newly-generated products will become available for download from EarthExplorer. The Landsat Product Identifier for each product contains the processing date (bolded in this example: LC08_L1TP_107083_20250513_20250515_02_T1). Users are encouraged to be aware of the this date to ensure the most recent products are being used.
In early July 2025, the Landsat Reprocessing Events page will be updated to reflect the details about the impacted products described above.
